Criminals, con artists, thiefs, no matter what you call them they have always been a part of our lives and now with the internet their job has just gotten more productive not to mention easier.They prey upon unsuspecting online customers and can even fool the most sophisticated online user. They know it is easier to steal your personal information than to rob a bank. At North Alabama Bank we care about you and want to help make you aware of the scams out there and help you to protect yourself from online fraud. Some things you should know:

  • What is Phishing?-Online fraud that attempts to collect a users personal information such as, social security numbers, pin numbers, and bank account numbers, then uses that information to obtain credit under your good name, empty your bank account, or max out your existing credit cards.
    • Examples of Phishing are fake e-mail messages sent with the intent of obtaining personal information. They will appear to be from a reputable business such as your bank or credit card company. Usually they warn you that unless you verify your account information your credit will be suspended. A link will be provided for you to click and will take you to a page that may look identical to the real site. WARNING! Do not click this link!  Legitimate business do not request information this way. If in doubt type the actual sites URL into your browser.
    • Fake charities will also attempt to steal your information by taking advantage of your goodwill and generosity. Never give out account information to any one calling you or emailing you asking for your donation.

Want to avoid being a victim?

  1. Don't reply to e-mail messages asking you for personal information. Just delete them.
  2. Don't click on any link you don't recognize in a message it could be untrustworthy.
  3. Protect your accounts with strong passwords and change them regulary.
  4. Don't send any personal information in an email; email isn't secure and it is the equivalent of a postcard, meaning it can be read by anyone who gains access.
  5. Protect  your pc use firewall, antivirus protection, and keep computer software and security settings current.
